Air Temp: 65-72 Water Temp: 55-58

We’ve had a few boats on the river since Mother’s Day weekend and covered a solid 20 river miles. First we welcomed Jeff, Mike, Joe and Rick. These men all worked hard over two days landing several trout and smallmouth bass. A mixture of nymph rigs, streamer and a specialty fly appropriately called, “The Aggravator” were successful. However, with flows over 1000cfs out of FEW all weekend, coupled with a few storm fronts, fishing was a challenge at times. Credit these four anglers for their perseverance.

Then we had two boats on the Lehigh on a spectacular Tuesday in early May. Release out of FEW was just under 1000cfs for the first time in over a week, but conditions on the river are stabilizing and the fishing is improving. From morning till about 2pm, trout were feeding well on black buggers and prince nymphs. I had the pleasure of guiding Kevin and he managed to boat 12 trout, including the royal flush - a brook, rainbow, brown and tiger. Kevin kept his flies mostly off the edges, down deep and twitching them at the end of a long swing. Still no surface activity, but with water levels hopefully coming down and air temps rising, we have good reason to believe that will be changing. If there’s any indication of the fish seeming to turn on to bugs, it’s that over half of Kevin’s trout ate the trailing prince nymph.

Air Temps 45-59F. Water Temp 47F. Overcast with scattered rain showers.

After checking and double checking the forecasted releases from FEW and Beltzville for the weekend, I decided to float from Walnutport to Northampton with my brother Dave and Nathan K. Swallows were everywhere and sporadic Hendricksons were on the water in the riffles. The USACE must have changed their mind at the last minute as the 400 CFS release that the posted on thursday for the weekend was changed to 900 CFS. Water level was above average (4000 CFS at Walnutport) but much lower than the 10,000 CFS earlier in the week. Water clarity was good but fishing was terrible. One 11″ brown trout was lost and no other fish were seen. Hopefully inflow to FEW and Beltzville will decrease this week and allow for some better fishing opportunities. Reports from the Upper Gorge were terrible also; this information proves our point that you can’t drop the water from 6,000 CFS to 3,000 CFS and then to 400 CFS and expect good fishing. Both of the “special” angler friendly releases from FEW (the first 2 weekends of trout season) have been a bust. With all of the “bonus” whitewater days so far this year, perhaps the rain gods will make up for it with some ”bonus” fishing days in June. We can only hope. For now it seems that most of the fish have been traumatized by the 6,000 CFS releases resulting in 10,000 CFS on the lower river. LRSA postponed stocking of the Glen Onoko to Palmerton section of the river due to the high water; stocking has been rescheduled for Sunday May 1st. Angling opportunities will be limited (drift boat only) again this week as the release at FEW was increased to 1,400 CFS earlier this morning (April 25th). When conditions improve, anglers should expect the blue quills, quill gordans and hendrickson hatches to be well under way. PK.

Air Temps 35-45F, Water Temp 36F

Two thirds of the ski patrol went to school with the Upper Delaware Streamer King (Charlie) on friday from Balls Eddy to Buckingham. Winter clothing and white streamers were necessary to survive the conditions and land some trophy trout. Four browns in the 18-23″ range came to the net with several other near misses (See attached pics). Late in the afternoon, blue quills and the occasional quill gordon brought 7-10 targets to the surface. Several of these targets eagerly ate a well placed imitation but unfortunately none were brought to the net. While water levels were above normal, the west and main stem were in prime shape for drift boat fishing. Anglers should expect this fishery to really turn on in the next week or so as the water and air temps increase. Conditions for the up coming “One Bug” should be perfect unless too much rainfall (in the form of forecasted thunderstorms) hits the area this week. PK.

Greetings from 1/3 of the “Ski Patrol”. Has the high water got you thinking of outdoor activities other than fishing? If so, you better re-focus as this weekend (April 23 &24) should provide an excellent opportunity to catch some early season trout on the Lehigh. Forecasted releases from FEW and Beltzville have been posted at 400 CFS each for Saturday and Sunday. This is a welcome sight when compared to the recent 4,000 - 6,000 CFS releases from FEW and the near 1,000 CFS releases from Beltzville. Sat and Sun forecasted releases, while still proving difficult for the wade angler, should provide excellent drift boat fishing from Glen Onoko downriver to Northampton. I personnally have been on the water several times this year and have caught (or had others in the boat) catch brown, brook and tiger trout up to 22″; several of these fish were caught on dry flies (see attached pics). These fish came from an area of the lower River that had not been stocked in 2011. Even the hot dry summer of 2010 didnt seem to effect this brown trout fishery. Anglers on the water this weekend should see Blue Quills, Stoneflies, and hopefully Hendricksons, mainly during the warmest temperatures of the day (typically late afternoon). So get out there and spread the good word. PK

Well, it’s late January and just about every one of our favorite fly fishing spots is either frozen or too dangerous to wade. Brave the streams if you must, but we suggest taking this opportunity to tie flies, clean your tackle and assess your gadgets and gear for the coming spring. But keep an eye on the forecast, cause you never know when that thermometer is going to enter the comfort zone of the 40s and award you with a winter fishing opportunity. In such cases we recommend fishing buggers, big nymphs and even egg patterns on streams such as the Little Schuylkill, Little Lehigh, Clarks Creek and Pohopoco Creek. Also, dates are filling up fast for our popular April Lehigh Upper Gorge float trips - book now so you have something to dream about through February and March!

The temps are all checking out now, at least they’re within a reasonable range of variance, so who knows. I emailed the USGS, don’t know if they’ll reply or take it seriously but at least the hot weather has broken for a few days. I hit the Water Works this evening because the Little Schuylkill is still too warm. I arrived at 6:00pm, water temp 64, skies clear and bright, water low and clear. I met an angler named Tom who was fishing about 120ft below the gauge block so I took up position upstream of him. It was a bad spot to get a decent drift but there were a good number of fish rising and I’m always up for a little challenge. #16 Tan Cdc Caddis was immediately productive, lots of “false takes” but there was a fish on the fly every few casts. It took a while to get the fish to actually take it instead of slash at it but I was using 6x, I would have been fishing 5x if I had any, which was good because I even broke off two big fish on that. I switched to my Tully Pupa(#16 Tan) and got three hookups within 5 minutes. Not a lot of fish landed but the action was good. I tagged a nice fish with the #16 Tan CDC Caddis at dark and also had a fish hooked up with a #14 Black Foam Beetle. Consider Fluoro tippets at this time, you can fish a larger tippet size and get away with it more often. I’ve been wrenching on a good number of fish with 5x Mirage on the Tully lately and I have some good fights where I was thankful for the extra strength, if the drift is extra tricky though you may have to switch back to nylon tippet to get a better drift. All in all I probably had 30 “false takes”(or whatever you like to call it when the fish attacks your fly but no hookup), 10 hookups, and 2 landed with dries in about 2-3 hours.

Since my last report some colder water has been flowing from Blue Marsh but the USGS reports and avrious internet reports need to be taken with a grain of salt as there have been moderate disparities in water temps between the Army Corps and USGS data. I took a temp tonight at the Stilling Basin of 66 degrees, which is reasonably close to the Army Corps number of 65.3 degrees, yet the Waterworks gauge is reading 59 degrees. I didn’t take the temp at the WW but I find it hard to believe that the water is cooling 7-8 degrees by the time it gets down to the WW. I had waded down about 3/4 of a mile from the Stilling Basin parking area and got a water temp of 69. Bottom line the USGS gauge is not reading correctly and only temps taken in person should be relied upon.

As for the fishing, it wasn’t bad. For my long initial wading period I didn’t see a fish rise, not even a bass or sunny. I was wading back up river when I thought I saw a nice fish rise. Then I saw it again. I got in position and tied on a foam beetle but nothing even looked at it. There were no real hatches though I saw a few Sulphurs and Cahills. Against my better judgement I tied on a Sulphur and missed one or two fish with it before slaying a few sunnies. They were all over it. I could see trout rising but still no bugs. I saw a few spent caddis and tried an imitation but no dice. For whatever reason I decided to tie on a #16 CDC Tan Caddis despite the fact that there were none hatching. Well, these fish must be imprinted on it because for half an hour I don’t think I needed to make more than three casts to a fish before the fish took the CDC Caddis. In 45 minutes I landed a bunch of nice fish including a 16″ bow that was just gorgeous. I should have netted it because the fish got loos in front of me while I was digging for a camera.
So the Tully is fishing well but please check the temps and do not rely upon USGS data at this time. Hopefully Mother Nature will help us out soon but the outlook is not good.

We’ve been busy with guide training and our travels over the past week have taken us to the Upper and Middle Delaware, Susquehanna, and Lehigh Rivers. Honestly, nothing has fished stellar. We had a large healthy trout caught by Colin in our guide school while targeting smallies, but in general the smallmouth ahve not turned on in great numbers on the Lehigh yet. We’ll have more exploration this week.

The Susquehanna was sad. I don’t know what else to say. The water is cooking and the bite is early morning and evening and it’s not good. Last year we saw some quality fishing which made us hopeful and we intend to test fish a little further north but the Harrisburg area is not fishing well.

The Upper D was challenging as always. We were there bedore the short bubble of water was released and I’m pretty sure everybody landed fish. Brian Z. from Maryland had a hog on in the West Branch but it came unbuttoned. I(Tim S.) lost a nice brown aside of the boat. Hatches were BWOs(#14-22), Sulphurs(#14-20), Cahills(#12) and various caddis. Best hookups came from CDC and Unusual BWOs(#14-20), and E.Vitrea dun imitations(Large Amber Sulphur #14).

We’ll have more reports this week. The Tully and the West Branch of the Delaware are fishing well at this time. Not much is fishing consistently for smallmouth, a cool down would help.

Unfortunately the time to check thermometers religiously has come. Besides working on our new raft today, I had some time to check out some local water and monitor quality. It’s not good. The Little Schuylkill should not be targeted for trout at this time below Tamaqua, and care should be taken in the upper stretches. The lower Lehigh should also not be targeted for trout right now. The release from Blue Marsh was 72 degrees tonight, with an evening low temp of 72 degrees, so the Tully is a bust as well, that’s the dam release temp NOT the Waterworks gauge. It’s time to look for cooler water. The temptation to fish for aggressive rising fish can be strong but the reality is these fish are stressed and if you’re going to fish on these streams you might as well take a stringer because even most of the fish that swim away will not survive. Spring Creeks such as the Little Lehigh are a much better choice at this time.
